Job Full Description:

North Country Community Mental Health (NCCMH), serving six counties in Northern Michigan, is seeking a skilled and composed Emergency Services Therapist to join its Crisis Services team in Petoskey, Michigan. This full-time, non-union, exempt, community-based role focuses on ensuring the immediate safety, stabilization, and care of individuals experiencing behavioral health crises.

The Emergency Services Therapist provides after-hours crisis intervention, psychiatric hospitalization pre-screenings, and treatment recommendations while collaborating closely with hospitals, law enforcement, courts, and community partners. This position also supports utilization management through clinical reviews and claims audits under the direction of agency leadership. Responsibilities:

  • Provide emergency crisis intervention services and psychiatric hospitalization pre-screenings in hospital, jail, and community settings
  • Conduct risk assessments, mental status examinations, and provisional diagnoses
  • Collaborate with individuals served to assess needs, develop crisis action plans, and secure appropriate levels of care
  • Coordinate psychiatric placements and treatment recommendations with emergency departments, law enforcement, and courts
  • Consult with NCCMH psychiatrists and crisis leadership as needed
  • Provide consultation and support to community agencies and professionals
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation within the electronic health record
  • Complete utilization reviews and prospective claims audits under the direction of the Chief Quality Officer
  • Maintain working knowledge of Medicaid requirements, MDHHS contract standards, and applicable regulations
  • Participate in rotating weekend and after-hours emergency services coverage
  • Demonstrate strong clinical judgment, ethical standards, and the ability to remain effective under pressure
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Schedule:

  • Full-time, Non-Union, Exempt (Community-Based Role)

Job Experience

  • Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) status as defined by the State of Michigan
  • Minimum of one year of experience providing mental health services
  • Ability to interact professionally with physicians and other healthcare providers
  • Strong clinical judgment, crisis de-escalation, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with satisfactory driving record
  • Reliable transportation and personal phone access

Preferred:

  • Experience in crisis services, emergency settings, or inpatient psychiatric environments
  • Working knowledge of behavioral health medications and chronic health conditions
  • Lived experience with behavioral health challenges

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to complete and maintain required trainings, including Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI), CPR, and First Aid (provided by NCCMH)
  • Physical ability to walk, stand, sit, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, and drive as required for the role
  • Adherence to NCCMH code of conduct, compliance plan, and personnel policies
  • Commitment to recovery-based, person-centered, and culturally competent service delivery
  • Compliance with all applicable Department of Community Mental Health, Mental Health Services Board, and regulatory agency requirements

Job Education

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology (licensed or limited licensed)
