Job Full Description:

A multi-entity company is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting operations across several business units. This is a hands-on accounting role responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial statements, and ensuring each entity’s books remain organized and audit-ready.

The Controller will work closely with ownership and an external CPA firm to support financial reporting, year-end processes, and ongoing compliance across retail, manufacturing, and real estate entities, while also leading and developing a small accounting team.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate accounting records across multiple entities, including retail, manufacturing, and real estate holdings
  • Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations
  • Record journal entries and manage general ledger activity
  • Prepare and deliver monthly financial statements to ownership
  • Develop year-end schedules and supporting workpapers for the external CPA firm
  • Track and manage sales tax, 1099 reporting, and other compliance requirements
  • Ensure all entity books are current, accurate, and well-organized
  • Coordinate with the external CPA firm to support financial reporting and tax preparation
  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Supervise and manage a team of 3–4 accounting staff members
  • Monitor financial activity across entities and resolve discrepancies proactively
  • Maintain organized financial documentation and ensure audit readiness
  • Travel to the Alma, MI facility approximately once per month to perform reconciliations and ensure financial alignment

Schedule:

  • Full-Time, Direct Hire
  • Location: St. Johns, MI
  • Travel: Monthly travel to Alma, MI (approximately 1 day per month) 

Job Experience

  • Strong experience in general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
  • Experience managing accounting functions across multiple entities preferred
  • Payroll experience required; experience with Paylocity preferred
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks (Online and Desktop) and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience supervising or managing accounting staff (3–4 employees)
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting processes
  • Experience working with external CPA firms preferred
  • High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently while effectively managing team priorities
  • Practical, solutions-oriented mindset with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Clear and professional communication skills

Job Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
