Job Full Description:
A multi-entity company is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting operations across several business units. This is a hands-on accounting role responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial statements, and ensuring each entity’s books remain organized and audit-ready.
The Controller will work closely with ownership and an external CPA firm to support financial reporting, year-end processes, and ongoing compliance across retail, manufacturing, and real estate entities, while also leading and developing a small accounting team.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate accounting records across multiple entities, including retail, manufacturing, and real estate holdings
- Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations
- Record journal entries and manage general ledger activity
- Prepare and deliver monthly financial statements to ownership
- Develop year-end schedules and supporting workpapers for the external CPA firm
- Track and manage sales tax, 1099 reporting, and other compliance requirements
- Ensure all entity books are current, accurate, and well-organized
- Coordinate with the external CPA firm to support financial reporting and tax preparation
- Oversee payroll processing and ensure accuracy and compliance
- Supervise and manage a team of 3–4 accounting staff members
- Monitor financial activity across entities and resolve discrepancies proactively
- Maintain organized financial documentation and ensure audit readiness
- Travel to the Alma, MI facility approximately once per month to perform reconciliations and ensure financial alignment
Schedule:
- Full-Time, Direct Hire
- Location: St. Johns, MI
- Travel: Monthly travel to Alma, MI (approximately 1 day per month)
Job Experience
- Strong experience in general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Experience managing accounting functions across multiple entities preferred
- Payroll experience required; experience with Paylocity preferred
- Proficiency in QuickBooks (Online and Desktop) and Microsoft Excel
- Experience supervising or managing accounting staff (3–4 employees)
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting processes
- Experience working with external CPA firms preferred
- High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently while effectively managing team priorities
- Practical, solutions-oriented mindset with strong problem-solving abilities
- Clear and professional communication skills
Job Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
