Job Full Description:

A manufacturing company in West Michigan is seeking a skilled Assistant to the Chef to support daily operations of its corporate café and assist with catering services for both on-site and off-site company events. This part-time, daytime role is ideal for a culinary professional with some food prep and cooking experience who thrives in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment. The Assistant to the Chef ensures meals and catering orders meet quality, presentation, and safety standards, while supporting the Café & Catering Chef in all kitchen operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare ingredients and cook meals for breakfast and lunch service, following established recipes and portion guidelines
  • Assist with preparation, packaging, labeling, and delivery of catering orders for on-site and off-site meetings and events
  • Participate in the transportation, setup, and presentation of catering orders, ensuring proper temperature control and food safety
  • Maintain proper storage, labeling, and rotation of ingredients and prepared foods
  • Support inventory management, including receiving, organizing, and storing deliveries
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment, and utensils according to food safety standards
  • Follow production schedules and standard operating procedures to ensure consistency and quality
  • Communicate effectively with the Café & Catering Chef and team to ensure smooth workflow
  • Assist with other kitchen or food service tasks as assigned

Schedule: Part-time, Monday–Friday, 6am-12pm, Occasional varied schedule may be required for special events and catering. 

Job Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a commercial kitchen, café, or catering environment
  • Basic cooking skills, knife handling, and standard food preparation methods
  • Knowledge of safe food handling, sanitation, and kitchen safety practices
  • Ability to follow instructions, multitask, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 40 lbs., and assist with food transportation

Preferred:

  • SERV Safe Food Handler Certification
  • Experience assisting with catering set-up or transportation
  • Prior experience in corporate or institutional food service
  • Interest in developing culinary skills and expanding responsibilities in cooking and catering operations
