4 Steps to Design a Better Hiring Process

Two icons and two arrows, making up a circle that represents a cycle. One icon shows three people next to each other and the other icon shows a handshake

While it may not take place on the production floor, designing a hiring process is a significant part of your continuous improvement efforts. As the job market evolves and industries transform, so should your strategy for finding great talent. Here are 4 steps you can take to design (and keep re-designing) a better hiring process.

1.    Revise job descriptions

2.    Focus on candidates’ personalities

3.    Develop a targeting strategy

4.    Re-evaluate your process

1. Revise job descriptions

Even if you’ve hired for a position before, it’s important to revise your job descriptions every time you conduct a search. If you are hiring a replacement, consider the strengths and weaknesses of the last person who held the position. Unless you’re hiring to replace someone who resigned on day one, your needs have probably changed since your last search.

2. Focus on candidates’ personalities

This may sound obvious, but it is often tossed aside when a candidate with a strong skill set and experience match is found. What makes your ideal candidate most excited about the role and your company? Consider these things when writing your job description, screening questions, and interview questions.

You can identify this person with our free Ideal Candidate Persona Worksheet. Consider their career aspirations and how they align with your vision for the future.

3. Develop a targeting strategy

Where is the job located, and how do you want people to find your open position? If you are posting on a job board, consider using location-specific boards whenever possible. While you can target locations with big boards like Indeed, you may also receive a greater volume of unqualified candidates.

Our Executive and Professional Recruiters prioritize seeking out passive candidates who may not be actively looking for new jobs yet. You might even have people in your professional network who are driven to succeed in similar roles at other companies. Starting a conversation with these individuals could lead to your next hire.

4. Re-evaluate your process

If you’re reading this article, you’re probably already evaluating the success of your hiring process. Even if you design a new hiring process based on these steps, it’s important to keep re-evaluating the process over time to ensure continued success.

As the job market changes, your hiring strategies naturally need to adapt to keep up. If you ever need a hand, our team stays on the cutting edge and is ready to find candidates who meet your specific needs. Reach out or call us at 651-383-2020, and we’ll be in touch within 24 hours.
