Job Full Description:

Our client is seeking an experienced QA/QC Inspector with a strong background in structural steel and pipe fabrication. This role is ideal for candidates who have hands-on inspection experience, understand fabrication standards, and can accurately document findings in accordance with industry codes and customer requirements.


Position Overview

The QA/QC Inspector will perform in-process, material, and documentation inspections within a fabrication shop environment. This role requires strong attention to detail, blueprint reading, welding awareness, and familiarity with ASME code requirements. Accuracy in measurement, reporting, and recordkeeping is essential.


Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferredbut not required for candidates with 10+ years of relevant fabrication inspection experience.

Experience

  • 2–5 years of QA/QC experience in structural steel or pipe fabrication.
  • Pipe or structural steel shop background required (not food, chemical, or unrelated industries).
  • Experience with welding inspection concepts, weld types, and defect identification.
  • Exposure to NDE methods (RT, MT, PT) is a plus.
  • Experience with ASME codes preferred:
    • Section VIII Div. 1
    • B31.3
    • B31.1
    • API 1104

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and fabrication drawings.
  • Strong dimensional inspection skills (level, square, diameter, length, ID/OD).
  • Understanding of ITPs, MTRs, POs, BOLs, and fabrication documentation.
  • Ability to document clearly and accurately on inspection reports.
  • Familiarity with calibrated gauges and measuring tools.
  • Strong reading, writing, and documentation accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

1. Documentation

  • Complete and submit all Inspection Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Prepare inspection reports, data books, and weekly summary reports.
  • Sign and date controlled drawings when inspections are performed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for audits and customer requirements.

2. In‑Process Inspections

  • Inspect fit-up for structural and pipe fabrication, including:
    • Gaps
    • Dimensions
    • Angles
    • Levelness
    • Flange orientation
  • Verify welder qualifications and required identification stamps.
  • Check weld quality for defects such as undercut, porosity, cold lap, etc.
  • Witness hydrostatic or pressure testing as required.
  • Validate contractor or shop NDE results (RT, MT, PT).

3. Material Inspections

  • Verify incoming materials against Purchase Orders and Bill of Materials.
  • Perform dimensional checks (length, diameter, thickness, etc.).
  • Confirm heat numbers and MTR (Material Test Report) accuracy.
  • Inspect surface prep, blast, and paint processes per the MPS procedure.
