International Shipping & Hazardous Materials Logistics
Our client is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Logistics Coordinator to support international transportation operations involving ocean, air, and ground freight, including hazardous materials shipments. Position Summary
The Logistics Coordinator will be responsible for managing international shipments across multiple transportation modes, ensuring compliance with hazardous materials regulations, coordinating with third-party logistics providers, and maintaining accurate shipping documentation. This role will serve as a key communication link between internal departments, vessel-based personnel, and external vendors to support efficient supply chain operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate domestic and international shipments via sea, air, and ground transportation.
- Manage hazardous materials logistics activities, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and company standards.
- Coordinate with third-party freight forwarders, carriers, customs brokers, and logistics partners to ensure on-time transportation and delivery.
- Liaise and communicate regularly with the Warehouse Supervisor, Logistics Manager, Procurement Coordinators, vessel personnel, and land-based teams regarding shipment status and logistics requirements.
- Coordinate outgoing air and ocean shipments while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, including DOT, IATA, ICAO, IMDG, and other hazardous goods requirements.
- Ensure hazardous materials are properly classified, packaged, labeled, documented, and shipped in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of hazardous materials shipments and supporting documentation.
- Select the most appropriate shipping methods for standard, cold-chain, and hazardous materials shipments to balance cost, transit time, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Track shipments from origin through delivery, maintain internal shipment tracking systems, and proactively communicate delays or issues to the Logistics Manager.
- Stay current on international customs regulations, hazardous goods requirements, internal policies, and certification renewals.
- Support mail room operations and oversee mail room staff and functions in the absence of the Logistics Manager.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support organizational objectives and mission-focused initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2+ years of international logistics experience.
- Minimum 1+ year of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) logistics experience.
- Active HAZMAT certifications in at least two of the following:
- DOT (Ground Transportation)
- IATA (Air Transportation)
- IMDG (Sea Transportation)
- Demonstrated experience coordinating international shipments across air, ocean, and ground transportation modes.
- Strong knowledge of international customs requirements and hazardous materials regulations.
- Experience working with freight carriers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and third-party logistics providers.
- Proficiency in shipping documentation, shipment tracking systems, and logistics recordkeeping.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications in all three HAZMAT disciplines: DOT, IATA, and IMDG.
- Experience supporting humanitarian, nonprofit, maritime, or global service organizations.
- Familiarity with cold-chain logistics requirements.
- Experience with international vessel logistics and marine operations.
